Topic: AI and the Global South: Practical actions to increase meaningful inclusion across the AI lifecycle and AI governance.

AI holds real promise for helping humanity tackle global challenges. Yet the limited inclusion of Global South civil society in AI decision-making – spanning problem identification, design, development, deployment and governance, including data use, risks undermining this potential and furthering marginalisation.

Incorporating diverse lived experiences through the AI lifecycle is not only a matter of ethics – it can help avoid AI models that are contextually inappropriate or even harmful.

In this participatory workshop, we will explore how humanitarians, technologists,

policymakers and civil society can collaborate to avoid replicating colonial dynamics across AI.

We’ll start with an overview of new research into Global South inclusion by CARE

International and Accenture, which centres perspectives on AI from civil society organisations in four global regions.

We'll consider practical steps to enhance inclusion and make AI more meaningfully responsible, with participants encouraged to share challenges, experiences, and suggestions for fostering equitable, participatory AI.
